Outbreaks of Douglas-Fir Beetle Follow Western Spruce Budworm Defoliation in the Southern Rocky Mountains, USA

چکیده

Changes in climate are altering disturbance regimes forests of western North America, leading to increases the potential for events overlap time and space. Though interactions between abiotic biotic (e.g., effect bark beetle outbreak on subsequent wildfire) have been widely studied, multiple disturbances poorly understood. Defoliating insects, such as spruce budworm (WSB; Choristoneura freemanni), suggested predispose trees secondary colonization by beetles, Douglas-fir (DFB; Dendroctonus pseudotsugae). However, there is little quantitative research that supports this observation. Here, we asked: Does previous WSB damage increase likelihood DFB (Pseudotsuga menziesii) Southern Rocky Mountains, USA? To quantify areas affected then DFB, analyzed Aerial Detection Survey data from 1999–2019. We found a presence followed defoliation more often than expected under null model (i.e., random distribution). With change intensify some disturbances, an understanding insect outbreaks important forest management planning, well improving our change.

A Tree-Ring Reconstruction of Western Spruce Budworm History in the Southern Rocky Mountains

Tree-ring width chronologies from ten mixed-conifer stands in the Colorado Front Range and New Mexico Sangre de Cristo Mountains were used to reconstruct the timing, duration, and radial growth impacts of past outbreaks of western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman). At least nine outbreaks were identified in the stands from 1700 to 1983. Severity and timing of outbreaks was hig...

Mechanisms of Douglas-fir resistance to western spruce budworm defoliation: bud burst phenology, photosynthetic compensation and growth rate.

We compared growth rates among mature interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco) trees showing resistance or susceptibility to defoliation caused by western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman), and among clones and half-sib seedling progeny of these trees in a greenhouse. We also investigated bud burst phenology and photosynthetic responses of clon...

A tree-ring reconstruction of western spruce budworm outbreaks in the San Juan Mountains, Colorado, U.S.A

Tree-ring records were used to reconstruct spatial and temporal patterns of western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman) outbreaks in mixed conifer forests of southern Colorado. Reconstructions in 11 host stands showed a regionally synchronous pattern of at least 14 outbreaks during the past 350 years. Intervals between outbreaks were highly variable within stands, but at the reg...

Spatiotemporal dynamics of recent mountain pine beetle and western spruce budworm outbreaks across the Pacific Northwest Region, USA

Across the western US, the two most prevalent native forest insect pests are mountain pine beetle (MPB; Dendroctonus ponderosae; a bark beetle) and western spruce budworm (WSB; Choristoneura freemani; a defoliator). MPB outbreaks have received more forest management attention than WSB outbreaks, but studies to date have not compared their cumulative mortality impacts in an integrated, regional ...

Predicting postfire Douglas-fir beetle attacks and tree mortality in the northern Rocky Mountains

Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) were monitored for 4 years following three wildfires. Logistic regression analyses were used to develop models predicting the probability of attack by Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, 1905) and the probability of Douglas-fir mortality within 4 years following fire. Percent crown volume scorched (crown scorch), cambium inju...
